Planting Out The Beans

The top soil is good here. The vegetable plot has been worked for over 90 years and before that, it was an orchard.   When we first arrived, it was so overgrown that you could not see where the old vegetable plot had been.  It was wonderful discovering what lay beneath the undergrowth and I have discovered blackcurrant, redcurrant and gooseberry bushes, which make wonderful cordials and puddings.

This year, all my beans are grown from last year's crop:

  • Blue Lake Climbing French Bean
  • Purple Violetto Climbing French Beans
  • Golden Gate Heritage Climbing Runner Bean
  • Stringless Climbing Runner Beans (variety unknown - from a neighbour)

With the crazy weather and constant rain and shine, the seedlings have grown rapidly.  They were sown late, but are making up for lost time.  They are now planted and rabbit-proofed. The row is now surrounded by wire netting, held in place with bean-sticks and metal pegs.  This does a pretty good job, and the rabbits usually give up.  I nearly gave up, too! We have squirrels and pigeons, so it can be a battle of wits.

The hedgerow and trees are flourishing.  It feels so peaceful being surrounded by all this greenery. I love the abandoned bin, the corrugated iron and bricks in our hedgerow and stubbornly refuse to tidy it up. It's vintage...

Another good day on the plot!
