Summer Pruning a Bramley Apple Tree

This Bramley Apple Tree I planted last year needed pruning. The tree was leaning to one side and when the apples grew it leaned further and further... Bramley apple tree before pruning. Bramley apple tree after pruning. As a rule, you can prune out 1/2 of this year's growth, but Bramleys are different, as they often fruit from the tips of the branches. (See Peter Hayes' Video Guide, Part One, below.) Don't prune off every tip or you will get fewer apples next year! We put in a larger stake, reinforcing it to support the tree better. I reduced the apples by a third, to prevent the weight snapping off the young branches. The apples will ripen in October and should grow much bigger.
