Make a Sunglasses Case

Everyone needs a sunglasses case in summer!  I made ours for safety glasses, to keep in our fossil-hunting kit.  Mine are made from fleece, but you can use other material.

You need
  • A piece of material for the body of the case 24cm x 18cm.
  • A strip of material to make the draw-string top 24cm x 10cm.
  • A strip of ribbon 35cm long.
I used an overlocker to sew the fleece and a sewing machine for the rest, but you can hand-sew if you wish.

Leave 1cm seam allowance.

First, cut out your main piece of material (24cm x 18cm).  Fold in half lengthways and sew down two sides, leaving the third open to put the glasses in.  (See above).

Cut out the second strip to make the draw-string top (24cm x 10cm).  Fold in half, lengthways and iron.  Turn under a 1cm seam allowance on all sides and iron.  Fit the top strip around the glasses case like a cuff. See how it works in the pictures above and below...

Pin top and bottom pieces of fabric together.  The fleece should now be sandwiched inbetween the strip of fabric. Sew together along the pin-line, as shown below (5mm from the edge). When you sew the two pieces together the strip becomes an extension of the glasses case.

Finish off by sewing a line of straight stitch along along the top, 1cm in from the outer edge.  This makes a sleeve for the ribbon to be inserted into. Thread ribbon through the sleeve and tie together in a knot. Add your pair of glasses and pull to close.

I finished off by adding an initial for each child.  They knew instantly which was their pair of glasses in the Fossil Hunting Kit.
