Fabulous Floor Cushions!

I made two big floor cushions for my kids' play-room.  They are easy to make and look fabulous if you choose the right fabric!   My fabric came from Ditto Fabrics: I order online.  They have an amazing selection of cotton prints, but you can use any cotton or cotton-mix you choose.

Measure your cushions and cut out your fabric 1.5cm larger all the way round to give you your seam allowance.  I used fabrics with contrasting patterns for my cushions, but you might prefer a plain or single-patterned fabric for a uniform look.

I ran up the small blue cushions in a pillowcase style and will pop up a tutorial for those soon!

You need
A large cushion and a zip that runs almost the full length of the cushion. (Mine have approx 3cm either side of the zip).

It is easier to sew the zip in first. Follow this tutorial to find out how to insert the zip into your cushion.

Cut out 2 pieces of fabric for your cushion and sew them together.  Put the right sides together, facing inwards. Sew along one of the three sides only (the side you want the zip to go).

On the reverse side, iron the seam flat and place the zip on top, upside-down, along the seam.  If you have done this right, the zip puller will be hidden at this point.  Pin the zip and sew in place on top of the flattened seam.  (See the video for a clear demonstration).  When you have completed sewing in the zip, unpick the seam and the zipper will be revealed, set in nicely underneath.

Now for the rest of the cushion.  Pin the material together right sides facing inwards, just like before.  Sew along the remaining three sides of your cushion cover.  Remember to leave a 1.5cm seam all the way around. Trim the corners off, close to the seam, to get a crisp corner when you turn it.  Turn the cushion inside out and you will have completed your cover!

Thank you for reading this post and have fun making your own cushions :)
