Inserting Buttonhole Elastic into a Skirt

Insert Buttonhole Elastic

1.   Measure elastic.  I used 2 strips, both half the width of my skirt.

2.   For each length, Zig-zag the end to be sewn into the skirt. If you have no zig-zag option on your machine, this can be turned under and sewn, to prevent fraying.

3.   Zig-zag the other end and turn under.  This will be the edge that you pull over the button.

4.   My skirt was lined, so the elastic was inserted between the two layers and sewn in place.  First, the skirt was turned inside-out and then the elastic was pinned inbetween the skirt and the lining.  See diagram below.

5.    Sew under the elastic along the waistline (See 5 on the diagram).
6.   Then you need to make a button-hole in the underside of the waistband (to pull the elastic through).  The buttonhole needs to be finished by hand.  Never made a buttonhole? See Professor Pincushion's handy video!

How to Make a Buttonhole by Hand - www.professorpincushion.com

If you have a fitted waistband, you need to make a hole on the inside of the Waistband first and thread the elastic through the band, before you can sew it securely at the end.

7.   Sew on 2 buttons and pull the elastic button hole over to secure it as tight as you wish.

This adjusts to fit my skinny teenager, but allows her room to GROW!
