Teenage Girls and First Periods

Comfort and confidence are the key to coping with periods. With two girls at secondary school, periods are here and I have been investigating what is available for girls today.  It is time to stop blushing and get talking...

Disposable Sanitary Pads and Tampons
These are easy to buy, easy to dispose of and discreetly wrapped.  Always, Kotex and Lillets have teen ranges, specially designed for girls.  The towels and tampons have the same absorbency, but are narrower and less-bulky.  The Lillets starter kit (pictured bottom right)  gives you a selection of towels, panty liners and tampons in a neat zipped purse.

Eco-Friendly Disposables
If you prefer the eco option, this is for you.  Natracare make unbleached disposable pads and tampons, which are kind to the environment and our bodies.  These can be found in selected shops and Internet stores.  See the stockists listed at the end of this post.

Cloth Pads
In the UK we have been slow to embrace the new cloth pads, but with amazing new materials, there really is nothing to fear. They are kind on the environment and your pocket and can actually help your menstrual cycle and periods get lighter. Users report fewer thrush and urinary infections. They are comfortable to wear and not as messy to use as you might think.

Bree's Tips for Using Cloth Pads...
She has been vlogging about sanitary products since she was just 14!

I bought this pack for my eldest daughter and it has a lovely selection of natural products, plus deoderant, sweets, and a friendship bracelet.  For a girl starting out, this box is bright and colourful, offers her choices and takes the fear out of of periods.

Menstrual Cups
These can be used by young girls and teens and can give you greater freedom than pads. Bree Farmer explains everything HERE  Not all would be confident enough to use them, but they are a great alternative to tampons so maybe one to consider later?

Period Panties
Who knew these existed?! These can be a confidence booster, if you have heavy periods.  They fall into two categories: those with a barrier to prevent leaks (like these below) and those with super absorbent linings to do away with sanitary products altogether.

These pictured are trendy boy-pants and they look and feel like normal pants. They have a leak-proof lining: the fabric goes all the way from front to back for extra security.
